Play is an integral part of childhood development. The City of Subiaco values facilitating diverse and quality play experiences through our playgrounds.

Time flies when you're having fun, and the current playground at Mueller Park is at the end of its safe and useful play-life. We are inviting the community to help us in the exciting process of renewing this playground.

Mueller Park playground (corner of Coghlan and Subiaco Roads in Subiaco East) is classified as a district park in the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries park hierarchy. This means it is a larger playground that may attract visitors from further afield (as compared to local or neighbourhood parks).

The replacement of the play equipment will be guided by community input, available budget, industry best practice and the City's Playspace Strategy.

This project has a two-part consultation process:

  • Stage one - an exploration of how the playground is used, the type of play children enjoy and the style of playgrounds you like - closed 11 November 2024.
  • Stage two - we have three playground concept design options for the community to assess and advise us of preferences. The options were developed in response to community feedback from Stage one consultation - closed 22 April 2025.

Stage one consultation results

We had just over 60 people take part in the Stage one consultation. The Stage one results showed:

  • Most people spend 30 mins to an hour in the playground, followed by 1 to 2 hours.
  • The most common age groups using the playground are: 2 to 5 year olds, followed by 0 to 2 year olds, then 6 to 12 year olds. A small percentage of 13+ year olds also use the playground.
  • The 6 top most favourite activities in a playground were: climbing, swinging, sliding, gliding, sand play and balancing.
  • Nature play was the favourite playground type (followed by traditional).
Have your say

The results from Stage one were given to playground designers to develop concepts for the playground.

Stage two consultation: In April 2025 the community was invited to review the designs and vote for their preferred option. We received over 80 votes, please see this news feed for an update.

We are excited to announce at the City’s Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 27 May, Option 1 (Nature Play Solutions) was endorsed for the design and construction of the new playground at Mueller Park (including removal of current playground).

We had over 80 community members take part in the voting and the results were close, with Option 1 being the most preferred playground. In particular the flying fox was a standout in the comments, as there is not one currently in Subiaco.

    • Option 1 – 32 votes (40%)
    • Option 3 – 27 votes (33%)
    • Option 2 – 22 votes (27%)

As part of the upgrade, it is planned that new BBQs, water fountain and the missing shade sail will also be upgraded/installed (the existing three shade sails will be cleaned/retained).

During the consultation we received comments about the toilets at Meuller Park, while an upgrade to the toilets is outside the scope of this project, the feedback has been noted for future consideration

There were also comments about the water play feature in the current playground (which has been out of action for some time). It has reached the end of its useful life and will be removed as part of the works. We are aware it is has been a much loved feature of the park (including by my own children), and decision was made with careful consideration of sustainability, safety and maintenance challenges.

The start date for the works is yet to be confirmed; however, the city is aiming to complete the project before the end of 2025. We will keep you updated via this page as more information becomes available.

Thanks again to those who took part in this process – we look forward to bringing new life to this well-loved play space.
