Ward and Representation Review 2018

About the project

The Local Government Act 1995 requires a review of wards and representation every eight years.

The city last reviewed its wards and representation ratios in 2016. The impact of the City of Perth Act 2016, which came into effect on 1 July 2016, triggered the need for the City of Subiaco to review its wards. This is because the Act ceded the City of Subiaco area south of Aberdare Road to the City of Perth. Consequently, City of Subiaco elector numbers reduced; the South Ward lost an elected member; and the flow-on effect to representation ratios resulted in inequitable representation across the district.

In September 2018, Council resolved to exercise the power under Schedule 2.2 of the Local Government Act 1995 to undertake a review of its wards and representation to provide an equal distribution in the City’s ward system.

Council endorsed consultation for several options, which are outlined in the city’s Review of Wards and Elected Member Representation Discussion Paper which can be viewed in the online document library.

High resolution maps of the ward options outlined in the city’s Review of Wards and Elected Member Representation Discussion Paper can be found in the online project document library.

Public submission period

After reviewing the discussion paper and considering the presented options, members of the community were invited to make a written submission about any aspect of ward boundaries and representation during a six week consultation period.

Public submissions closed at 5pm on Tuesday 6 November 2018.

Next step

The Ward and Representation Review is on the agenda for the City of Subiaco council meeting on 11 December 2018.
