Subiaco Pop-up Square

The City of Subiaco and RAC partnered through RAC’s Reconnect WA initiative, to deliver the Subiaco Pop-up Square.

RAC’s Reconnect WA initiative provides funding to local governments to deliver community-based projects, seeking to help reimagine and revitalise streets and public spaces within local communities. The City of Subiaco was successful in receiving funding from RAC for this temporary project; you can read more here.

Subiaco Pop-up Square was a trial pop-up located along a small portion of Churchill Avenue between Rokeby Road and the access way next to Delisio Pizza Romana from Thursday 25 March to Sunday 9 May 2021.

A number of events and activations took place in Subiaco Pop-up Square, but there was also plenty of time for people to sit, relax and linger. The initiative aims to build opportunities for communities to come together, create safer and ‘healthier’ streets for pedestrians and cyclists, increase vibrancy in the town centre, and help support local businesses.

Installation began Sunday 21 March 2021 and dismantling was completed by Wednesday 12 May 2021, closing this section of the road for 7.5 weeks in total. The road closure included both lanes of Churchill Avenue and five car bays. During this time traffic was re-routed and a traffic management plan was in place. The City of Subiaco carpark located between Churchill Avenue and Barker Road remained open.

How was the community involved?

The City hosted design workshops in February 2021. Community members and business owners provided valuable feedback on the design of the space including theming, furniture, entertainment and artworks. We loved hearing your ideas and will be able to consider them for this, and for future, projects.

Everyone was invited to enjoy the events and activities, or simply to relax in the space, from Thursday 25 March to Sunday 9 May 2021.

The City sought feedback on the space throughout the life of the project, and this feedback has the potential to inform future City of Subiaco town-centre projects.
