In 2020, in part in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the Western Australian government introduced a new Part 17 to the Planning and Development Act 2005 (as amended by the Planning and Development Amendment Act 2020). This amendment grants the Western Australian Planning Commission temporary decision-making powers to determine proposals over $20 million in metropolitan Perth, and over $5 million in regional areas.

The State Development Assessment Unit (SDAU) is a dedicated team supporting the WAPC with the lodgement and assessment of development applications, including consultation on these projects.

Proposals must be eligible within these thresholds in order to be determined through this new assessment pathway.

Information about the consultation process being undertaken by the State Development Assessment Unit (SDAU) can be found in their FAQs: https://www.dplh.wa.gov.au/sdau-faq
