Hay Street Greening Project
Green streets and places
Urban greening is critical to building environmental resilience. Expanding tree canopy and diverse planting help reduce urban heat, improve air quality, enrich soil, and support healthier communities and local wildlife.
Hay Street Greening Vision
Hay Street forms part of Subiaco's commercial heart, connecting the City of Subiaco from East to West. The City of Subiaco plans to deliver a series of phased and coordinated greening upgrades along Hay Street, improving the footpaths, street trees and public spaces to create a safer, greener and more welcoming place for everyone.
The first stage of the project focuses on Hay Street between Townshend Road to Ellen Street.
This project is part of the city-wide Green Streets and Places program listed within the City of Subiaco's Council Plan 2025 (Item 2.4). The long-term project objective is to enhance greening along Hay Street, integrated with the delivery of major civil upgrade works.
This greening trial aims to deliver increased tree canopy and diversity, enable new spaces for additional greening, street furniture and other amenities within the street, while future-proofing the street in the event of the return to two-way traffic.
The project will combine new canopy trees and water sensitive urban design and landscaping to enhance the character and everyday experience of the area. Alongside essential bus stop works proposed by the Public Transport Authority (PTA) to move to inline bus bays to create more generous footpaths.
Whether you’re stepping off the bus, visiting local businesses, parking or walking down Hay Street, the spaces along the street will feel easier to use, more comfortable and more vibrant.
